Report: Celtic-linked Kyle Joseph in advanced talks with Swansea City

Reported Celtic target Kyle Joseph is in advanced talks with Championship club Swansea City, according to Wales Online.

Joseph is out of contract this summer with his deal at Wigan Athletic coming to an end on June 30th. This comes after Celtic reportedly held talks with the player’s agent back in February [Daily Mail]. It was stated then that he would only cost Celtic £230k in a cross-border development fee

In recent times, Newcastle have been touted as favourites to sign him [Daily Mail]. However, Wales Online state that the young Scottish striker has held positive talks with Swansea.

The report claims that the Swans have been monitoring Joseph’s situation since January. It’s said that Swansea see him as being a development player first and foremost as opposed to being a first-team reglular.

Joseph ended the campaign with five goals in 20 first-team appearances [Transfermarkt].

No Celtic move on the horizon for Kyle Joseph; Swansea one of many options

There have been no reports about Celtic progressing their move for Joseph since April. However, that’s not to say we won’t definitely be signing him up. The signing of Liam Shaw and the sale of Patryk Klimala showed that someone is still making transfer decisions.

If the Scotland under-19 international came to Parkhead of course, he would have to settle for a similar development role. He doesn’t appear to be anywhere near first-team ready yet.

Managing a full campaign of games in League One at only 19 is impressive stuff. It’s given Joseph a platform, and it’s clear he now has plenty of options. Wales Online believe Celtic, Rangers, Newcastle, Preston, and Sheffield United are all interested.

Celtic won’t be doing the vast majority of their transfer work until a new manager is appointed. However, Joseph would represent absolutely zero risk. Considering he would almost certainly go straight into the under-20s, this is a deal that could be done without the new man in place.

Celtic are going to have a major problem in the striking department this summer. Odsonne Edouard looks set to leave with his contract expiring, whilst no decision on Leigh Griffiths has yet been made. With Klimala already gone, our options could be halved.

Joseph isn’t at the level to replace any of those players as of yet. But given his recent League One exposure and profile boost, you can see why the Hoops may still hold an interest.

In other news, Dermot Desmond must give the new Celtic boss the same reported backing he was due to give Eddie Howe.
