Celtic have tabled a bid to sign impressive South Korean international Cho Gue-sung, Football Scotland has reported today.

Over the weekend, it seemed that the Bhoys may well miss out on the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors forward after Bundesliga side Mainz offered £2.7m for his services.

However, Football Scotland reports that Celtic have entered the reckoning with an official offer worth more than the Germans’ bid.

There could be a fair bit of movement on all this but it’s also said that Jeonbuk are resigned to losing their star man during the January transfer window, with their technical director in London to oversee negotiations.

Cho had a superb 2022, scoring 21 goals in all competitions for his clubs finishing as the league’s top scorer and powering Jeonbuk to a Korean Cup win.

The 24-year-old also featured for his country at the Qatar World Cup, scoring two goals against Ghana in the group stage of the tournament. He netted six in total for South Korea throughout 2022.

Celtic need competition in the forward areas to push the Bhoys to a new level and give Ange Postecoglou even more options in the final third. Missed chances were unfortunately the hallmark of our Champions League campaign.

Cho looks to have the kind of impressive profile that’d make him an exciting signing. It’s also pleasing to see Celtic act so ruthlessly in the transfer market up against established clubs on the continent.

We must have serious interest in the player and hopefully it pays off with a confirmed transfer over the coming weeks.
