Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw is set to move to Motherwell for the rest of the season, according to the Scotsman.

In recent days it’s looked as if the midfielder was potentially heading to St Johnstone. However, the report states that the Steelmen have managed to pip the Saints to the post in the race for the player.

Ange Postecoglou told 67HailHail as recently as November that the club would look to loan out both Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide respectively.

Shaw has only made 4 appearances for the club since his move from Sheffield Wednesday. It’s clear that there’s raw talent there, but a move to Motherwell will be invaluable at this stage of his career.

The Hoops have yet to let anyone go this January as things stand. Shaw looks like being the first to potentially depart ahead of a big second half of the season for the player.

Motherwell are currently 4th in the Premiership and vying for the European spots this term.

Liam Shaw leaving Celtic on temporary deal is the right move

There’s simply no other option at the moment than to loan Shaw out. It’s by far the best move his career to take right now, and it’s something the player must be itching to get done too.

Heading to Motherwell gives him the kind of exposure and first-team opportunities he so desperately needs. It’s much more profitable for him than sitting on the Celtic bench between now and the summer, twiddling his thumbs and waiting for pre-season.

This is also a much more beneficial move for him than a switch to St Johnstone would’ve been. Whilst battling to avoid relegation would’ve come with its own pressures, Saints aren’t in a place where the atmosphere would’ve been ideal for the Celtic man.

For now, his goal will simply be to get as many minutes under his belt as possible. And considering he’ll also be helping the Steelmen to stay in the top 6 and battle for European places – it’s a positive kind of pressure he’ll be under.

It also gives him more exposure to the division than he would have by staying at Celtic. Whilst Shaw has shown decent attributes, he wouldn’t have the chance to grow them if he stayed in Glasgow for the rest of the season.

Hopefully this one gets done in the next couple of days. It’s far too good an opportunity for him to turn down.
