Celtic had a scout in Belgium today to watch Connor Barron in action for Scotland U21s up against Belgium, The Scottish Daily Express reports.

The paper say that Ange Postecoglou and his team have been left impressed with Barron’s performances for Aberdeen recently.

The 19-year-old started for Scotland in a 0-0 draw alongside U21 captain and Celtic defender Stephen Welsh.

The Express believes that Barron has been earmarked for an important role under Jim Goodwin next season.

It’s stated that it would take a ‘major offer’ to convince them to sell.

His contract runs until 2024, so the Dons can afford to play hardball this summer.

Barron initially started last season out on loan at Kelty Hearts but ultimate burst into the Aberdeen after the new year, managing to make 15 appearances in all competitions.

Connor Barron earns Goodwin praise

Goodwin was full of praise for him back in March, telling The Times: “He’s been brilliant. I can’t take too much credit for the boy at first-team level here as he was in the team prior to me coming in, but he deserves to be in the team.

“He had a dip in form against Hearts [a 2-0 defeat] where the whole team was poor on the night but you saw him back to his best against Rangers [a 1-0 defeat in Aberdeen’s subsequent fixture]. For a young boy in the middle of the park at Ibrox in a tense atmosphere, he handled the occasion very well.

“He’s brave on the ball and, for a small lad, he wants to get stuck in as well. He has great attributes but is nowhere near where we think he can get to in terms of his development. Connor is a very good player with great potential. He has so much to learn and improve on which he knows and he is not getting above his station at all.”

Barron plays in central midfield where Celtic have many options but we also know that Postecoglou is looking to further strengthen those positions ahead of the new season.

With strong options in Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley, Yosuke Ideguchi and David Turnbull, perhaps going for a player to be developed further is the way to go.

One to watch!
