Ange Postecoglou’s summer work already appears to have gotten underway with the Scottish Sun linking Celtic with a move for Iraqi left-back Mohanad Jeahze.

The report states that Celtic are looking into a potential £2m deal for the Hammarby left-back. This is said to be due to the fact that Ange wants a new defender in as soon as the January transfer window opens.

The Sun also claims that Hammarby wouldn’t stand in Jeahze’s way if Celtic came calling. However, it would still take an acceptable offer with the player under contract in Sweden until 2023.

That means that Jeahze will be into the final 12 months of his contract come the summer transfer window. It remains to be seen if Celtic would be able to get him on a cut-price deal.

Polish heavyweights Lech Poznan failed to nab him for around £900k last summer [Fotboll Direkt]. The Sun believes that Hammarby are expecting fresh interest from across Europe this year.

It’s also been claimed in the article that Ange is set to get rid of 2019 signing Boli Bolingoli this summer too. Boli has had failed spells with Istanbul Basaksehir and Fc Ufa since being fazed out after his Covid breaches. He’s still under contract until 2023.

Left-back appears to be a priority for Celtic boss this summer

Regardless of whether we make a move for Jeahze or not, left-back does appear to be on the agenda this summer.

Celtic certainly have plenty in the way of quantity when it comes to the left-back position. But do we really have the quality necessary? Especially for UCL football? Behind Greg Taylor, we only have Liam Scales and Boli at the club as natural left-backs. Adam Montgomery also clearly needs more first-team minutes elsewhere.

Ange was discussing Scales’ situation over the weekend and after stating that he was fit and available, he then stressed the need for extra quality in the summer [Daily Record]. So that perhaps tells you all you need to know about the manager’s thoughts on that particular area.

Celtic would be fine with the options they have domestically. Not forgetting that we have Josip Juranovic who could easily come in and play a role too. But if we’re serious about taking the next step, we need genuine competition for Taylor.

Jeahze, meanwhile, has certainly had a productive campaign with Hammarby in Sweden. They currently sit top of the Allsvenskan after a swift start in which the Iraqi international has managed 5 assists in 13 appearances. Last season, he was a part of 8 direct goal contributions in 34 games [Transfermarkt].

It would be an interesting option if Ange decided to make the move. But one thing seems certain – a left-back is on the agenda one way or another this summer.
