After the big-money sale of Jota to Al-Ittihad, Celtic are doubtful keen on the exit of other important talents from last year’s treble-winning squad but it seems they could soon be contending with bids for midfielder Matt O’Riley.

The Scottish Daily Mail [11/07 print edition] reports that several sides are showing interest in the Danish U21 international, with Real Betis the most pronounced so far.

It’s said that Betis, who secured a sixth-place finish in La Liga last term and will be playing UEFA Europa League football later this year, are currently discussing whether or not to make an offer for O’Riley.

Valencia, Sevilla and English Premier League outfit Brighton are all said to also be admirers and keeping an eye on his situation. If there is genuine interest from multiple parties then that puts Celtic in a strong negotiating position.

Matt O’Riley still has a bright Celtic future, if he wants it

The midfielder is also contracted until 2026, meaning there is absolutely no rush to sell him if the club are keen on retaining what he offers the squad. Unless he is actively seeking a move away from the Bhoys, it’d make sense to rebuff any interest at this stage.

O’Riley has made 72 appearances for Celtic already and was one of Ange Postecoglou’s most selected players. We’ve invested a lot of playing time into him and his potential suggests he can improve further. Under Brendan Rodgers, perhaps given more creative license, he could be a potent option in a vibrant midfield.

Our best young assets are always going to be admired by teams around Europe and, increasingly, further afield – but it’s important we don’t let this successful squad be broken up too much unless Rodgers doesn’t fancy any of the personnel available and is looking for upgrades.

O’Riley’s is a situation to watch over the next two months, for definite. But Celtic hold all of the cards.
