Celtic are interested in signing AZ Alkmaar attacker Albert Gudmundsson, The Telegraph has reported today.

The paper states that Gudmundsson is out of contract at the end of the season and that the Bhoys are keen on bringing him to Glasgow on a free transfer.

However, rivals Rangers are also reportedly in the mix, with both clubs free to speak to the player in January.

Gudmundsson played against Celtic this season

Gudmundsson, an Icelandic international, has been in decent form for AZ this season. He’s netted six goals in all competitions, four in Eredivisie and two in the Europa Conference League.

His team actually had to play in that competition because of Celtic. Ange Postecoglou knocked the Dutch team out of the Europa League playoffs with a 3-2 victory on aggregate.

Gudmundsson played in both matches, starting the fixture at Celtic Park.

Celtic are still on the hunt for attackers heading into the new year. Injury problems over the last couple of months have exposed issues in the front four.

Gudmundsson, who primarily plays on the right flank, would add experienced competition on the right flank, pushing James Forrest and Liel Abada for a starting spot.

In total, he has 24 goals and 10 assists in 93 appearances for the Dutch side. On a Bosman, that sounds like a good bit of business to me.

However, there’s a long way to go before this one is over the line. Especially as Celtic appear to have their eyes fixated on Asia for the main thrust of their January signings.

In other news, “Wow that’s rare”; Celtic supporters get behind the club board in a big way tonight.
