Celtic are interested in signing winger Niclas Eliasson in the final week of the transfer window, The Sunday Mail report (26/01 print edition, back page).

The paper say that he is firmly on the radar of the Scottish champions ahead of deadline day, with the player having been watched by scouts already.

What’s more, his future at English Championship club Bristol City is uncertain, with his contract coming to an end.

It’s said that while there’s a potential break in his current deal this summer, the Robins hold the option of a further year.

However, his manager Lee Johnson has confirmed that he has recently changed agents so there could be an opportunity to offer him a brighter future if Celtic can negotiate with the play-off chasing side.

As quoted by The Sunday Mail (26/01 print edition, page 78), Johnson said: “The way I would see it is he has 18 months on his contract but we would absolutely love it for him to sign a new contract. We value him hugely.

“We’re discussing, he has changed agents but we have been sitting down and talking about it since the start of the summer but then agents change, other priorities come in between that.”

What kind of season is he having?

Eliasson has certainly had a platform to show off his skills this season, making 27 appearances in total for Bristol City since the start of the season (Transfermarkt).

In that time he’s contributed three goals and 11 assists, proving to be quite the creative talent in the English second-tier.

Ten of those assists have come in league action, despite more than half of his appearances in that competition coming from the bench (WhoScored).

Splitting his time between the left and right flanks, he’d be a versatile addition to a Celtic squad that is primarily looking for competition for James Forrest.

The Scotland international’s goal return has dried up over the last six weeks and with there always being the potential of injuries, Eliasson could prove to be a capable squad player in Glasgow. At 24, he also has the potential to improve further in his peak years.

We’ll need to see how the week pans out with regards to our reported interest, but it is heartening to hear that Celtic are targeting another attacker before deadline day.

After the captures of Patryk Klimala and Ismaila Soro, can we add a defender too?
