Report: Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist waiting for Celtic decision
Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist will wait to see whether Celtic make a move for him before deciding his next step, according to the Sun on Sunday [print edition, 30/05, p59].
Siegrist is said to have been scouted on several occasions by the Hoops this season. However, as recently as January, both CSKA Moscow and Schalke had been linked with moves for the United man [Blick].
The impressive shot-stopper is into the final year of his Tannadice contract, with reports claiming that he could be available for as little as £400k [Scottish Sun]. A string of impressive performances will have alerted suitors after a stunning debut campaign in the Premiership.
And the Sun has today reported that fellow suitors Ipswich Town are set for frustration over their own pursuit. This is because the stopper is apparently waiting to see if Celtic move for him.
Siegrist touched on the rumours surrounding his future last week. Speaking to Blick last week and asked about Celtic specifically, the Utd man said: “If there is interest (from Celtic), I’ll take a close look. I don’t want to force a change, but I am already aiming for the next step in my career”
Dundee United man Ben Siegrist could be waiting a while before Celtic make their move
There are no guarantees Celtic want Siegrist this summer. There never has been in truth. But if he’s committing to the wait, he could be sitting there patiently for some time given our managerial situation.
With the Eddie Howe disaster in the rear-view mirror, Celtic appear to be homing in on Ange Postecoglou. The BBC reported yesterday that an announcement could be made as soon as early next week. However, given Covid regulations in Scotland, he would have to self-isolate for 10 days upon his arrival.
That means it could be almost two full weeks before Postecoglou even gets a look at his squad, and ultimately his goalkeepers. Any chance on a swift decision on what to do next looks to be unreasonable.
It still doesn’t stop this from being a potentially great deal for Celtic to pursue. He’s a stopper who’s outperformed Scott Bain for large spells this season, and would clearly be an upgrade on him. At only 29, he still has plenty of good years ahead of him.
How the new manager views the goalkeeping situation will be interesting. For me, it’s not just an upgrade on Vasilis Barkas that’s needed, but an upgrade on Bain too. It could be the case that the new boss sees something in Vasilis to work with. Even so, at least one new goalkeeper is needed, and Siegrist should be firmly in the picture for that spot.
Time will tell whether the Swiss stopper bags what would undoubtedly be a dream move for him.
In other news, Celtic are reportedly close to their first post-season departure, for a ridiculously low fee.
