Report: Everton players seriously impressed with Celtic-linked Josh King
Everton striker Josh King has been seriously impresssing his team-mates in training, according to the Athletic.
Celtic were linked with a move for the Norwegian international earlier this year [Scottish Sun]. It was reported by the Scottish Sun that incoming manager Eddie Howe had idetified his former Bournemouth striker as the natural replacement for Odsonne Edouard.
So far, King has yet to make a single start for the Toffees despite arriving under Carlo Ancelotti. He’s made 11 appearances in total, with his longest spell in a match being 34 minutes [Transfermarkt].
However, the Athletic reports that some players and people close to the squad are said to be confused by the fact he hasn’t been playing. It’s been reported that he’s been impressing plenty of his team-mates in training.
King looks set to depart the Merseyside outfit at the end of the season when his contract expires.
Everton and the Josh King situation makes for interesting reading for Celtic fans
You can perhaps understand why Everton have been reluctant to just throw Josh King into the mix. Considering they have the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison in their ranks, it makes sense.
However, this is reassuring for Celtic. Whilst there have been no follow-up reports on a move for King, it takes away any notion that this is a player going through a troubled period. If the Everton players remain impressed with what he’s bringing to the table, it suggests he should be sharp should we move for him.
It had been reported by the Liverpool Echo over the weekend that a meeting was to be held this week to discuss his future. No decision from that meeting has as of yet been reported. But given his lack of game-time, it doesn’t look likely he’ll be staying.
Of course, King’s wages could still be the main stumbling block here. The Sun reported that the striker is on £40k-per-week in the Premier League. Whether he would want to part with such heavy cash is questionable.
But it appears he’s still got the talent despite his lack of opportunities this season. It’ll be interesting to see whether we make the move here. Undoubtedly, we won’t be the only ones with potential interest.
