Report: Ipswich considering £350k bid for Celtic-linked Benjamin Siegrist
English League One club Ipswich Town are considering a £350k offer for Dundee United’s Celtic-linked stopper Benjamin Siegrist, according to the Daily Record.
In the past, it’s been claimed that Siegrist would cost clubs as little as £400k to take from Tannadice [Scottish Sun]. The low value will be due to the fact he’s into the final year of his contract this summer [Transfermarkt].
The Sun on Sunday said at the end of May that Siegrist was waiting to see whether Celtic would come forward with an offer before making his next step [print edition 30/05, p59]. However, the Hoops have been linked with Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan after the appointment of Ange Postecoglou last week [Sky Sports].
Reports from the player’s homeland have in the past stated that Celtic have scouted him several times. Both CSKA Moscow and Schalke have also been linked with a move in recent months [Blick].
Speaking about the player’s situation as quoted by the Daily Record, new United manager Tam Coutts said the following: “We are trying to acquire assets which we can sell in the future or develop assets we can sell. So we understand these players won’t be here for eight, nine, ten seasons.
“Benji had had a phenomenal season and I would imagine there will be a lot of interest in him because of that. I would be surprised if there wasn’t interest after the season he had.”
Ipswich considering first move; Celtic may need to move quickly
Reports of Siegrist waiting to see whether Celtic come in for him offer a degree of relaxation. However, he isn’t going to wait around forever, and his agent will surely be advising him to make a decision soon.
As things stand, it feels like any interest is on hold for now, at least from Parkhead. With the Ryan reports surfacing and the fact the new manager is only just in the door, it’s tough to see the Siegrist link.
Not that we don’t need another goalkeeper. Just because Postecoglou may want Ryan, it doesn’t mean we can’t buy two. There are major question marks surrounding all three of Celtic’s current shot-stoppers. If the club were to strengthen with an experienced international in Ryan and another solid stopper in Siegrist, we’d be in a good position.
Certainly a better position than we’re in now. However, it would also require Celtic to find buyers for two of our three current stoppers. It’s difficult to see anyone stumping up for Barkas or Bain at the moment. Another loan for Conor Hazard, meanwhile, doesn’t feel like the right move for now.
Siegrist would be a low-risk buy so long as United were indeed happy to sell at £400k. He’s shown himself to be a better shot-stopper at Bain and would provide solid back-up. If he signed for the club, you wouldn’t see many complaining.
But Celtic’s plans for the goalkeeping position remain up in the air. Postecoglou is bound to give everyone a chance to impress him first and foremost. That surely then gives Ipswich a big opportunity to swoop in for him whilst Celtic assess their own situation.
