Ligue 1 side Rennes are willing to consider selling right-back Brandon Soppy to Celtic for €5m [£4.3m], according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

Last night, Fabrizio Romano claimed that the Hoops had entered talks with Rennes regarding a move for Soppy. However, he also said that there were other French clubs interested in a deal.

L’Equipe report that there are two French clubs interested in Soppy as well as two English clubs. However, they highlight Celtic’s interest in particular.

The newspaper says that the player wasn’t interested in a new one-year extension to his contract, which expires in the summer of 2022.

Despite breaking through under former boss Julien Stephan. Soppy hasn’t been able to kick on. Last season, he only managed 11 appearances [Transfermarkt].

Ligue 1 talent to Celtic; Hoops bringing pace to right-back?

Soppy actually featured a friendly between Celtic and Rennes back in the summer of 2019. However, it wouldn’t be until a year later that he would make his senior breakthrough. Even then, it’s been tamed with not as many opportunities as the player would like.

Celtic have been missing some genuine raw pace at right-back since the departure of Jeremie Frimpong. The young Dutchman was never truly replaced at Parkhead. Now, we face the prospect of heading into Champions League qualifiers with Anthony Ralston in the position.

Soppy described himself as “fast, physical, and aggressive” in a recent interview with French outlet Onze Mondial. The idea of having a right-back that even contains one of those traits is something that would excite the Celtic support.

The elephant in the room is whether Celtic would be willing to part company with that kind of cash. After all, Soppy has only played 11 times at senior level. At 19, he may look like one for the future, but he would undoubtedly be signed for the here and now at that figure.

A UCL tie against Midtjylland wouldn’t be something that concerns the France under-18 international though. Competing for first-team spots with Rennes would see him arrive with decent technical ability.

But the situation is simple. Celtic need a right-back urgently. It’s arguably our biggest issue this summer. Soppy is clearly available. If we like the look of him, get the deal done.
