Report: Mikey Johnston on flight to Portugal after choosing loan destination
Celtic winger Mikey Johnston appears to have chosen Portugal as the destination of his loan move away from the Bhoys, with Football Scotland reporting he is on a flight there today.
Johnston has been linked with a number of clubs around Europe in this transfer window but, as we discussed this morning, was most credibly linked with a switch to Vitoria Guimaraes on deadline day.
The attacker now looks destined to finalise his switch to the Portuguese top-flight, giving him the chance to find regular week-to-week football as opposed to sitting on the sidelines at Celtic.
The Academy graduate has made 80 appearances in total for the club but has never really cemented himself as a first-choice pick in the starting eleven, a situation that has been exacerbated by injuries and increasingly stiff competition arriving in Glasgow.
The latest signing, Sead Haksabanovic, would appear to have pushed him further down the pecking order.
A move to a competitive Portuguese outfit is an exciting one for the 23-year-old and if he impresses there could be the opportunity for him to return and make a bigger impact at the Bhoys.
Even if not, it’s a move that can really light a fire under his career and help him find a bigger move down the line.
Johnston has always had talent but just lacked consistency. If he can find that then he still has a very bright future ahead of him.
