St Johnstone are keen on signing up Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw on loan this January, The Scottish Sun has reported.

The paper say there is loan interest in both Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide after they joined the Bhoys last summer. The Perth side are keen on Shaw in particular.

The duo arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for modest cross-border compensation fees and have been training regularly with the first-team. However, they’ve failed to make a consistent breakthrough into Ange Postecoglou’s plans so far.

Shaw did impress in a 3-2 home win against Real Betis last month, so it’s easy to see why a Scottish Premiership would be keen on his services. With Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate signing this week, Shaw falls further down the pecking order.

Similarly, Urhoghide caught the eye of Celtic supporters in that match and it’d be no surprise to see him make a similar move.

Both players signed four-year deals at the Bhoys so there is plenty of time for them to make an impact at Celtic. A loan right now in the Scottish top-flight sounds like the perfect opportunity for both.

They can get some regular first-team football under their belts and get used to the division ahead of a return to Postecoglou’s squad in summer pre-season.

Ultimately where both players end up in the second half of the season is also dependent on their own wishes and the Celtic boss is set to consult with them on the next steps.

However, it sounds like they’ll be added to the loan watch pool over the next few months.
