In this January transfer window Celtic have been linked with plenty of players. For the most part, those players have been strikers. However, now the Hoops have been linked with a defensive/central midfielder.
Voetball International is reporting that the Hoops are interested in signing Feyenoord midfielder Renato Tapia, who is out of contract at the end of the season. The report also claims that city rivals Rangers are interested in the player.
It is not surprising to see Celtic linked with players in January, after all, it is one of the two times of the year when the team can sign players.
Hoops already have plenty of midfielders
However, the report of the interest in Tapia is bemusing. The reason for that is that Celtic already have plenty of midfielders in the squad.
Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham have occupied the positions for most of this season, with Nir Bitton and Scott Robertson also featuring at times. That is five players trying to earn two positions in the team.
The only way that a move for Tapia makes sense is if one of those players is leaving soon. That doesn’t seem likely in the immediate future.
Maybe the Hoops see the player as a long-term successor for Scott Brown, who doesn’t really play as a defensive midfielder, but at times has drifted towards the back to get the ball from the centre-backs.
Not a priority position at this moment
At the moment though, midfield doesn’t seem like a priority for Celtic. Signing a striker and maybe a winger should be what the Hoops are focusing on.
Would Tapia make many first-team appearances for the Hoops if he joined in January? Probably not. Signing him for next season would make a bit more sense.
However, at the moment, the prospect of the Hoops signing another midfielder to add to the ranks does seem a bit bemusing.
