Celtic have been linked with a new signing, and if the Hoops move for the player it could cast doubt on the future of a recent Hoops hero.
Greek newspaper Sportime are reporting that the Hoops are interested in signing AEK Athens goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.
The report goes on to mention that any potential fee for the player will be around £6 million. The timing of this report is certainly interesting.
Current goalkeeper was hero vs Lazio
It comes less than 24 hours after current Celtic number one goalkeeper Fraser Forster was the hero of the 2-1 Europa League victory over Lazio.
He pulled off two sensational saves that helped the Hoops to victory. However, any move for a goalkeeper most certainly casts doubt on Forster’s future with the club.
It was recently reported by the Daily Echo that Forster’s loan deal with Celtic does not contain a clause to buy the player on a permanent deal at the end of the season.
The reported interest in Barkas could suggest that Forster’s stay in Glasgow is going to be a short one. That is news that will not please the Hoops support. The vast majority of the Celtic support will want Forster to remain at the club, especially after his excellent performance against Lazio.
Finances could decide player’s future
However, it could all come down to finances. Southampton may be looking for more money for the player than Celtic are willing to offer.
That is why the Hoops may well be interested in another goalkeeper. The Hoops won’t be spending that sort of money on a player unless they are going to be first-choice.
If that is what Celtic are willing to spend on Barkas then he will be the first-choice goalkeeper. It will be interesting to see who is in goals for Celtic at the start of next season.
Whilst fans may hope that it is Fraser Forster, it might not turn out to be the case.
