Reported Dermot Desmond involvement leads to question marks over Celtic transfer policy

The reported involvement of Dermot Desmond in Celtic’s recruitment work undoubtedly has many questioning our transfer policy.

The Daily Record claimed last night that the principle Celtic shareholder has been dealing directly with several top figures in the transfer market.

It’s stated that Desmond has been only involved in the club’s transfer work this summer. However, it doesn’t go into any real detail on what remit he’s made for himself in that regard.

All it does is add more question marks on to the club’s summer recruitment policy. We were all made to believe that it was Dom McKay and Postecoglou who were taking the leading roles in our summer work.

If Desmond is also getting involved, this is something Celtic could do with clearing up for supporters. It leads to concerns that it’s he who’s sanctioning signings. If that isn’t the case, surely this is something Celtic would want to clear up.

Celtic transfer policy needs some clarification

It’s worth remembering that Celtic have yet to replace Nick Hammond as Head of Football Operations. There is no sign that a Director of Football is making his way to Glasgow anytime soon.

If we had made the appointment, it would’ve been him dealing with McKay and Postecoglou in our recruitment work. That Desmond is reportedly so heavily involved leads to big questions over who’s in charge here.

Ideally, Postecoglou will have the final say on transfer signings. Securing the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi from Japan suggests the manager is certainly being listened to.

But every signing should come down to the manager and nobody else. Whilst you can understand McKay’s involvement given the financial side of things, it’s difficult to see what role Desmond can positively influence. Regardless of what fans make of this story, it’s something the club could do with clarifying for fans.

After all, many are certainly concerned with how we may be working behind the scenes. Here’s a look at the reaction to last night’s report:
