Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Cardiff City youngster Japhet Matondo.

The 16-year old winger has featured for the Championship sides under-23s team and is also highly regarded in the international set-up with Wales under-17s.

Matondo is predominantly a left-sided winger. However, he can also play on the right flank.

According to a report this evening from Football Scotland, Celtic have expressed an interest in bringing the Cardiff City academy prospect to Parkhead this summer.

The report also mentions that Matondo is seen as a potential replacement for former academy graduate Ben Doak, who departed the club to join Liverpool in April.

Celtic aren’t the only team looking to bring the talented youngster in this summer, though, with English Premier League side Leeds ‘keeping tabs’ on him.

But, with his contract coming to an end at the Welsh club, Celtic could be handed the advantage of having to pay considerably less compensation to sign Matondo, which is expected to be around £130,000.

This is due to the cross border rules used previously by the Hoops to sign players such as Moussa Dembele and Liam Shaw.

If Matondo was to sign, it is expected that he would start off in Tommy McIntyre’s Celtic B side, who will be playing their football in the Lowland League once again next season.

However, similarly to Doak, first-team opportunities could become a real possibility for the Welsh youngster.

It would be an intriguing start to the summer transfer window, adding some highly-regarded young talent to the ranks who could have an impact in years to come.
