Sam Cosgrove should not be a Celtic transfer target

Celtic might well be on the move for another striker in January. Neil Lennon may decide that another player is needed to help Odsonne Edouard in particular.

He is the only striker that has looked like scoring for the Hoops on a regular basis this season. Leigh Griffiths has been out for over a month with an injury. Whilst Vakoun Issouf Bayo has not really convinced when given the chance.

Therefore, it would not be a complete surprise if the Hoops sign another forward in January. One player that could have been a candidate is Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove.

He is a very good scoring record for the Dons over the last two seasons, scoring 36 goals. He had the chance to show that he could cut it against the big teams when he played for Aberdeen against Celtic at Pittodrie on Sunday.

A good performance in that game could have put him near the top of Celtic’s January transfer list. However, he was incredibly ineffective in Celtic’s 4-0 win at Pittodrie. He was easily handled by the Celtic centre-back pairing of Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer.

He won few headers in the game, and didn’t have any chances either. That might well signal to the Hoops boss that Cosgrove is not a player that Celtic should be looking to sign in January.

Will need to score more goals between now and January

Perhaps if he kicks on and scores another 10 goals between now and the end of the January transfer window then Celtic will consider making a move for the player.

He will have to play a lot better than he did in his last performance against Celtic for that to happen. For Neil Lennon, it looks like any search for a new striker will continue on for a while yet, and Sam Cosgrove is not likely to be on the list for January.
