Celtic target Japhet Tanganga is more likely to stay at Spurs today than join another club on loan for the rest of the season.

The Daily Record reported this morning that he was one of the options that Celtic are looking at after the collapsed move for Ben Davies.

Burnley and West Brom have also been credited with an interest.

However, Sky Sports’ latest update on the player suggests he won’t be going anywhere.

As reported on their deadline day live blog (12:41), Sky Sports News reporter Paul Gilmour said: “There’s a possibility Japhet Tanganga could move on loan to Celtic, Burnley or West Brom. We’ve been told in the last few minutes it is more likely he’ll stay.”

Tanganga is an academy graduate at Spurs and is now on the fringes of the first-team squad under Jose Mourinho.

The 21-year-old has made 18 senior appearances for the club, seven of which have come this season [Transfermarkt].

However, he’s not been part of Mourinho’s Premier League plans and needs regular week-to-week football to progress.

It seems though Spurs still see him as a viable back-up option heading deeper into the season. That rules Celtic out of a loan switch.

The Celtic hunt for a central defender will go on until tonight’s midnight deadline.
