Celtic announced on Monday that youngster Jonathan Afolabi will spend the second half of the season out on loan at Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic.

The Republic of Ireland youth international made the switch to Celtic Park from Southampton last summer but has not managed to break into manager Neil Lennon’s first-team plans.

The 20-year-old has yet to have a taste of senior football in his career so far.

His move to Dunfermline provides the opportunity to show he can find consistency in performance and cope with physical rigours of Scottish football.

Lennon was initially excited about his signing last August, suggesting he might find his way into his team sooner rather than later.

As quoted by The Irish Times, he said: “He is sort of on the cusp [of the first-team reckoning].

“He will come in and train with us and we will get a good look at him over the next few weeks and see what we want to do with him in terms of his progression.

“He is raw but he has good potential.”

He’ll certainly be a name to keep an eye on over the coming months as the Pars look to force themselves into promotion play-off contention behind runaway league leaders Dundee United.
