Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Major League Soccer outfit Montreal Impact for the transfer of former Celtic star Victor Wanyama, the London club announced on their official website tonight.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon set the rumour mill ablaze late last year when he admitted he’d love to have the Kenyan at Celtic Park, speaking at the club’s AGM.
Speculation persisted all the way into January when, on deadline day, The Evening Standard reported that the Scottish champions were in talks to sign him on loan.
Ultimately that didn’t happen and it now seems any hopes of landing him in the summer transfer window have now faded, with the player apparently on his way to Canada.
The midfield enforcer would have been a fantastic signing for the Hoops, who made himself a hero during his first spell at the club, impressing domestically and even against illustrious opponents such as Barcelona.
A permanent return always seemed unrealistic though given his probable wage demands and potential transfer fee.
The Standard had reported that Spurs wanted £9m for the player, who earned £62,000-a-week.
Celtic will just have to try and continue unearthing gems of the future who make a name for themselves in Glasgow before hitting more high-profile leagues, following in the footsteps of players like Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Moussa Dembele.
