Striker who rejected Celtic transfer this summer, now finds out that the grass isn’t greener

Celtic made a meal of transfer deadline day.

It’s one of many reasons why Celtic fans are protesting ahead of their Premiership clash against Kilmarnock on Sunday at Rugby Park.

With Adam Idah heading to Swansea, being told he can go, then being pulled back and then being allowed to go.

A host of names were being tipped to secure a very late transfer to Celtic, including Chelsea’s out-of-favour forward, David Datro Fofana.

But Fofana opted against joining Celtic, and he has now landed himself a new club, as it proves the grass isn’t always greener.

Fofana could have been playing in Europe, challenging for the title, and putting a few winners’ medals around his neck, because that’s what Celtic do.

But instead, he has joined Fatih Karagümrük in Turkey, who are currently hovering above the relegation zone, like Rangers in Scotland, after narrowly avoiding relegation the previous campaign.

‘Our club has reached an agreement with Chelsea’s 22-year-old forward David Fofana for a one-season loan with an option to buy,’ wrote Fatih Karagümrük on social media.

‘Our Ivorian player, who played on loan at Göztepe in the first half of last season, began his career in the 2020-2021 season at Molde. Scoring 24 goals in 65 matches at Molde.

‘Fofana transferred to Chelsea, one of the Premier League’s prominent clubs, in the 2022-2023 season. The prolific striker also played on loan at Union Berlin and Burnley. Having experienced the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, and having worn the jersey of the Ivory Coast national team.

‘We welcome David Fofana to our family and wish him success under our red and black colours.’

Celtic’s striker options

Given Fofana’s recent record of clubs, he has played for five different teams in two years, then it probably shows that Celtic should be glad that they didn’t sign him.

The 22-year-old has 14 goals in his last three seasons as a centre-forward, playing in Turkey, England and Belgium.

So, whilst Celtic haven’t done themselves any favours with how they have managed their striker situation. At least they haven’t added to the problems by signing Fofana.
