“Strong, quick and comfortable”; Gustaf Lagerbielke seems to be exactly what Celtic need

Celtic fans have been offered some more insight on potential new signing Gustaf Lagerbielke.

The 23-year-old Swedish central-defender looks like he could be the club’s next summer signing. The latest seems to be that there is definite interest from our side, but that a deal is yet to be concluded.

That hasn’t stopped the Scottish media from heading in to overdrive though. A number of outlets devoted their ’10:30 scoop’ to Lagerbielke on Tuesday evening, adding to the sense that a move to Celtic is a goer.

While we won’t touch on the Daily Record’s royal take on things, the Scottish Sun‘s effort did at least add something new to proceedings.

They spoke to Kalle Karlsson, the manager of second-tier Vasteras SK where Lagerbielke spent a short spell in 2021.

Karlsson’s assessment was glowing, with him saying: “Gustaf is a top professional. He trains well and does exactly what the manager asks every time. Whatever is thrown at him, he will handle it.

“Gustaf has worked so hard to get to where he is in football, and he has all the qualities to go far in the game. He is strong, quick and very comfortable on the ball. His passing is excellent also.

“It was a pleasure to work with him and we have stayed in touch. He is the kind of person you only want the best for.”

Pretty hefty praise then from Karlsson. He seems in no doubt that the central-defender would make a success of it if he came to Scotland.

The “strong, quick and very comfortable on the ball” remark is particularly exciting. When designing a central-defender to play under Brendan Rodgers, those are the qualities you would look for.

At times in Europe, our ability to pass out under pressure has been our downfall. If Lagerbielke is able to aid us in that regard, whilst also being strong and quick defensively, we could be on to a winner.

Let’s hope this is a deal that can be concluded pretty quickly.
