The innocent explanation for Maik Nawrocki’s Legia absence amid Celtic links

Reported Celtic transfer target Maik Nawrocki won’t play for Legia Warsaw this weekend.

Legia begin their new Ekstraklasa campaign with a home clash against LKS Lodz on Friday evening.

They’ve had a spotless pre-season campaign, beating the likes of Red Bull Salzburg and Qarabag and winning the Super Cup last weekend.

But when the real action gets underway they’ll be without one of their key players in Nawrocki.

The young centre-back is wanted by Celtic among other clubs. It seems like there has been a lot of speculation about his future already this summer in Poland.

When news of Nawrocki sitting out the Lodz clash was reported, many Celtic fans may have interpreted it as evidence that a deal was close. That may still be the case, but it does seem like there’s an innocent explanation for his absence.

“Maik Nawrocki suffered a minor injury and will not be at our disposal,” Legia boss Kosta Runjaić explained prior to the match. (Daily Record)

This chimes with an article from Polish outlet TVP Sport which said that Nawrocki had missed two training sessions this week following Legia’s Super Cup win.

They described the issue as “minor health problems”. It’s not totally clear what is up with the player but he did play just 27 minutes of last weekend’s match, coming on as a second-half sub.

The cynic amongst you may still ponder if this is just a deflection tactic as Nawrocki closes in on his next club.

Whatever the case, it feels like his future will be decided relatively quickly.
