Celtic’s pursuit of Paulo Bernardo continues now he is back at Benfica following a positive loan spell at Parkhead last term.

Proving his worth as a valued member of Brendan Rodgers’ squad, the Portugal Under-21 international registered four goals and three assists in 33 appearances last term [Transfermarkt].

Reports have indicated that Celtic have tried to re-negotiate his buyout stipulation of £6 million to somewhere around £3.5 million.

Nevertheless, there have been suggestions that his wages could be a stumbling block in initiating an agreement between both parties.

More information on Bernardo’s situation has come to light as Celtic supporters wait for the chips to fall in the transfer market.

Paulo Bernardo’s pre-season plans

According to Portuguese publication Record, Bernardo will report for Benfica’s pre-season camp despite ongoing negotiations with Celtic. Roger Schmidt is keen to supplement his squad due to several internationals still being away on duty.

He is joined by Henrique Araujo and Martim Neto; nevertheless, none of the trio are anticipated to have long-term futures at Estadio da Luz.

The outlet claim that Bernardo’s ‘plan’ is to move to Scotland permanently, re-iterating his desire to join Celtic ahead of the new campaign.

Nevertheless, until an agreement can be found between both parties, he will be present in training for his parent club despite being deemed surplus to requirements in Lisbon.

Although the development may worry Celtic supporters, the reality is he is a Benfica player. His involvement in their sessions is nothing more than standard practice. Hopefully, the Bhoys can finalise a deal that will see Bernardo back at Parkhead before competitive action begins.
