The number of appearances Callum McGregor is away from breaking Billy McNeill’s record

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has moved one step closer to eclipsing the record set by Celtic legend Billy McNeill.

McGregor started the Hoops’ Europa League game against Bologna, which is no surprise given that he has the armband.

The 32-year-old is an ever-present and even played against Auchinleck Talbot in the Scottish Cup.

He has a wealth of experience when it comes to playing in Europe too and is edging closer to overtaking McNeill in the appearance department.

Callum McGregor needs five more European starts to take record

His start against Bologna is the 65th he has made in European competitions.

Club legend McNeill made 69 starts for the Bhoys, meaning that McGregor needs five more to become the outright leader.

If he were to reach 70 starts in the 2025/26 season, he will need Celtic to finish inside the top 24 and start at least four games.

Quite the achievement for one of the best Celtic captains and ambassadors for the club in recent years.

Who will replace Callum McGregor as captain?

It’s a day that nobody wants to think about but knows that it will have to come one day.

Kieran Tierney seems like the natural option to replace him due to his connections with the academy.

This team clearly lacks leaders at present, but if Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers are still around, they would also be worthwhile considerations.
