Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed there’s something in the recent reports linking Carl Starfelt with a move away from Celtic this summer.

Various outlets have reported that teams in England and across Europe are monitoring his situation. Celtic are said to be braced for bids for the Swedish international.

And Rodgers didn’t shy away from that fact against Ross County, even naming him on the bench instead of the starting eleven for that very reason.

The manager confirmed an exit is on the cards speaking to BBC Sportsound pre-match, saying: “Carl is in a position where he may be leaving the club. He’s been fantastic and really respectful but he’s in a position where we may lose him. So this is a chance for Maik to build that partnership and work with Cam.”

And after the match, Rodgers told Sky Sports something could go through within the next week, stating: “Carl could leave, hence the reason for not starting. That may be something that goes through next week. We shall see. He’s obviously been a fantastic servant. He’s a great guy, really committed, but there are reasons why he might want to move on.”

If Starfelt’s transfer does come off, he’ll be the second Celtic regular to leave the squad this summer after the big-money deal involving Jota and Saudi Arabia.

Celtic have signed Maik Nawrocki already, which will help replace his contribution but the Bhoys ideally need three quality centre-back options for the coming season. More business will need to be done before the close of the transfer window in a few weeks’ time.

Starfelt made his 87th appearance off the bench in today’s win at Celtic Park. He’ll be remembered fondly for his time here, helping the Bhoys to significant trophy success over the last two seasons.

Hopefully, he can now make the club a strong profit on his transfer, which can be reinvested back into Rodgers’ squad.
