Celtic made a loan approach to Paris Saint-Germain for left-back Mitchel Bakker, but were rejected by the French club, Sky Sports have reported this weekend.

The broadcaster goes on to state that the door is not completely closed on the potential move, with the Bhoys making the signing of a left-back their main priority before next month’s transfer deadline.

Boli Bolingoli has been sidelined after his pandemic protocol problems and Greg Taylor badly needs some competition in the position.

Bakker doesn’t have much senior experience but at 20-years-old is already managing to make some appearances in the PSG first-team, which is no mean feat considering the talents they have.

He also got his education coming through the famed Ajax academy, making the move to Paris last year.

Celtic appear to be the kind of club that could offer him regular week-to-week action and really develop his game.

That’s the kind of thing we managed to do with former PSG youth player Odsonne Edouard.

Bakker has Juan Bernat and Layvin Kurzawa ahead of him in France, limiting his scope for the minutes he needs over the coming season.

It’s often something of a risk to rely upon untested players but Bakker has the profile of someone on his way to the top of the game and offers Neil Lennon a quality option on a budget.

These Celtic supporters certainly seem keen on signing the Dutch U21 player, taking to Twitter today to share their thoughts on the report…
