Celtic fans have reacted poorly to the announcement that Mark McKenzie has moved to Belgian club Genk.

McKenzie had been linked with a move to Celtic for months.

It had been reported multiple times by Sky Sports that the Scottish champions were tracking his progress at Philadelphia Union.

The 21-year-old centre-back had a stand-out year in Major League Soccer, named in the league-wide team of the year and nominated for the defender of the year award.

As recently as last month he spoke about the interest in him from Celtic, suggesting he was open to a switch to the Scottish Premiership.

We don’t know the reasons behind his eventual move to Genk. Celtic may well have played their hand for his signature, and he’s chosen a Belgian switch.

That kind of thing happens and can be out of our control.

However, there’s definite frustration from some Celtic supporters that we couldn’t bring him in.

With Shane Duffy not working out and question marks surrounding Nir Bitton and Hatem Abd Elhamed, only Kristoffer Ajer currently has the support’s confidence.

McKenzie would have been an exciting, forward-thinking signing that suggests Celtic are building for the future.

Let’s not write the club off yet. There could well be an exciting signing in the pipeline.

Fans, in the meantime, have taken to Twitter this afternoon to share their frustration…
