Celtic-linked Aaron Boupendza is back on the market after talks with Fenerbahce came to an end, according to Turkish outlet Aksam.

The Hatayspor striker has been linked with a move to Fener over the last several weeks, with twist after twist in the saga. Celtic, meanwhile, were first linked with a move for the player back in March [90Min].

However, Aksam report that talks between Hatayspor and Fenerbahce have come to an end. This is said to be due to the fact that the selling club wanted €5m [£4.3m] as well as two players from their domestic rivals.

Yet despite the breakdown in talks, Boupendza’s sale is reported to be certain one way or another [Aksam].

This could alert the likes of the Hoops. Turkish media reported back in May that Celtic had seen a £6.5m bid rejected for the striker [Milliyet]. Whilst that’s debatable, his destination still doesn’t seem certain ahead of the summer.

Aaron Boupendza remains a potential candidate for Celtic should Odsonne Edouard depart

So long as Odsonne Edouard remains at the club, Celtic likely won’t move for Boupendza. He would be a big-name signing and Celtic surely wouldn’t be splashing out as much as £8.5m to secure a deal [90Min].

But it’s one for Celtic to continue monitoring for now. Goodness knows what will happen with Edouard. Keeping him here beyond the August transfer deadline day will be an extremely tough ask. Perhaps even an impossible one.

When Celtic do decide to replace him, they’ll need to be proactive. A player of similar ability or profile will be required. Someone who we can look at and be confident in the idea that they can step into Edouard’s shoes. Boupendza would have that type of profile.

He finished last season as Turkish football’s top scorer with 22 goals to his name [ESPN]. He also wowed with his wand of a left-foot and his strong hold-up play in the final third.

That he hasn’t moved to Fenerbahce can only be a good thing from a Celtic perspective. In my view, this should be the club’s number one target should Edouard leave the club at some stage.

And under the current state of play, Boupendza’s signature could be anyone’s.
