Vinicius Souza to Celtic update as City Group make Bhoys preferred destination

The City Group’s preferred destination for midfielder Vinicius Souza is Celtic, Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has reported this afternoon.

A number of clubs are said to be chasing the player, who is registered to Lommel, part of the City Group.

Joseph reports that Mark Lawwell’s previous organisation are eyeing a loan move to Celtic but that the final decision on his future will ultimately be decided by the player and his agent.

Stiff competition remains for his signature with Ajax the latest club linked following reports of interest from PSV, Fenerbahce, Club Brugge and Bologna.

Ajax appear to present the greatest risk given they can also offer him guaranteed group stage football and play in Eredivisie, which has a better reputation than the Scottish Premiership.

Souza looks to be an exciting option. Analysis done by Celtic fan groups such as The Cynic suggests he is a very busy and battling defensive midfielder who complements that side of his game with dynamic dribbling and ball-carrying.

That combination would be a big hit in an Ange Postecoglou midfield that relies on both traits.

At this stage, Celtic landing him would be a bit of a coup, though I’d suggest there’s a long way to go on this story.

Souza’s season with Mechelen in the Belgian top-flight last term appears to have attracted all sorts of attention.

We also know that Postecoglou values commitment above most other traits, so if the player has hesitation about a switch to Glasgow that could sink any potential deal too.

Signing a defensive midfielder would give the manager tactical flexibility heading into the new season, with the option of moving Callum McGregor further forward unlocked, or even playing both in a deeper role when Champions League action comes around.

If it turns out not to be Souza, then expect another player with a similar profile to be linked with a move to the Bhoys this summer.

In other news, Sky Sports yet to confirm Celtic plans with last season’s big disappointment still fresh.
