Celtic aren’t the only team interested in Rennes defender Brandon Soppy this summer, Fabrizio Romano has reported this weekend.
The transfer journalist has been at the heart of speculation linking Carl Starfelt to Celtic. That still looks like the Bhoys will complete it.
Romano has also reported Celtic interest in Soppy, who is considered a potential solution to the team’s glaring right-back problem.
However, it may not be an easy ride to land him.
Romano now reports that Serie A side Udinese and English Premier League new boys Watford are keen on the player. The Pozzo family own both clubs.
When Celtic are pitched against teams from the top five European leagues, it automatically becomes more of a struggle to complete a deal. We likely won’t have the wage capability to compete with this duo.
However, we could offer Soppy a likelier path to regular first-team football. That’s what he is already missing at Rennes. Would he want to move to another team and sit on the bench most of the time?
Soppy’s mere arrival in Glasgow almost guarantees him a starting berth, as it stands. He’d only be competing with Anthony Ralston. We can make him the main man on the right side of our defence.

That’s a powerful lure, and one that I am hoping can ultimately steer this transfer race in our direction.
The likelihood is, though, that this one could rumble on for a while as Rennes and Soppy both consider their options.
