Watford are the latest high-profile club to show interest in Jose Cifuentes, who Neil Lennon admitted was on Celtic’s radar during the summer transfer window, The Sun report.
The Hoops boss told BBC Sportsound back in July that the young Ecuadorian was on Celtic’s radar after a stellar U20s World Cup with his country.
The player had earlier claimed to reporters he had a choice between signing for the Scottish champions or Manchester City (The Scottish Sun).
No move transpired and he remains at CD America in his homeland.
Now after a further boost in reputation another English Premier League side are on the scene.
Cifuentes has recently broken into the senior Ecuador side, winning three caps to date and starting his first match during the recent international break against Argentina.
What’s the current situation?
The Sun say Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores is keen on the 20-year-old, rivalling the Hoops for his signature.
If multiple top-flight sides in England are now entering the race to bring him to Britain, it makes Celtic’s task that much harder, especially if it increases his price tag.
Celtic has proven to be a viable development club for exciting young talents over the last few years, so if we’re interested in January perhaps that kind of sway could help our cause.
However, the lure of regular first-team football in England could prove to be too tempting for the player. The Sun reckon Flores is keen on exploring that possibility rather than sending him out on loan.
Can we steal a march on cash-rich clubs down south?
