West Ham source believes the Hammers could join Celtic in January transfer chase
West Ham are interested in reported Celtic target Lee Buchanan, according to exWHUemployee.
The source, who’s become something of a legend in Hammers circles, believes David Moyes holds “firm” interest in Derby County trio Jason Knight, Max Bird and Buchanan.
The Derby County left-back was first linked to Celtic in October [Sun]. Celtic have a glut of options in the position, but it seems likely that at least Boli Bolingoli will leave the club. Adam Montgomery started well in Greg Taylor’s absence, while the former Killie man has returned to action.
Buchanan, in what’s been a torrid season for County, has been in and out of the team. Most recently, the defender suffered an injury that could keep him out for all of the January window.
With Derby County in financial disarray, a fire-sale is likely for Wayne Rooney’s side. They had already been sanctioned prior to the season starting. In November, their problems were compounded with another 9 point deduction [Guardian].
Regardless, 20-year-old Lee Buchanan is seen as a potential star of the future. He’s already made 60 first-team appearances for Derby despite his tender years [Transfermarkt]. Little surprise, then, that this season’s woes haven’t put big clubs like West Ham and Celtic off.
Will West Ham join Celtic in a serious bid for Lee Buchanan?
As previously discussed, it doesn’t seem like the right time for Celtic and Lee Buchanan; West Ham may have a free run here, if exWHUemployee is to be believed.
Simply put, there are too many left-backs at Celtic now. Postecoglou will surely want to sell or loan at least two before adding to the ranks. It doesn’t really make sense otherwise.
Liam Scales performed admirably in a cameo appearance against Dundee United. He came on for Greg Taylor, who had a fine game. Adam Montgomery seems a very decent prospect, Juranovic can cover the position too. Boli Bolingoli probably doesn’t have a future at the club.
But then, factor in Reo Hatate. Should he come to Celtic, that’s potentially 6 players who can play at left-back. That is, if the Hoops were to use Hatate in that position; he’s primarily a midfielder. But the point remains.
Given Buchanan’s injury status, the likely fee involved, and interest from clubs like West Ham, I don’t see Celtic moving for the left-back.
It seems he could well be destined for the Premier League instead.
