Ange Postecoglou is having a mixed time of it since leaving Celtic for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Celtic hero is still on course to win a trophy with the London club this season – Spurs are in the League Cup semi-finals, still in the Europa League and progressed in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Celtic’s road to defending the Scottish Cup begins at the weekend when they host Kilmarnock, but in England, the Premier League teams have begun their FA Cup journey.

That included Postecoglou, who won the Scottish Cup in green and white colours, getting a taste of what it’s like down south.

Despite being a National League side, Tamworth were inches away from causing one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history as they forced Tottenham into extra-time.

The Midlands side were moments away from winning the game in stoppage-time of normal time, as Postecoglou was breathing a sigh of relief when the final whistle finally blew and his team were victorious.

But during the game, Celtic were discussed on commentary because of a Tamworth player impressing in the backline.

Sam Matterface mentions Celtic as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham beat Tamworth in the FA Cup

Postecoglou’s recruitment at Celtic was outstanding, from the underrated Alistair Johnston to the Japanese heroes he brought to the club.

But Sam Matterface, during commentary for ITV Sport, claimed that when Ange was at Parkhead, he wanted to sign Ben Crompton.

The 21-year-old, who is on-loan at the non-league side from Sunderland, played the entire match at fullback and kept some high-quality attacking players at bay.

And Matterface explained how he could have been a Celtic player when Ange was looking for defenders during his time in Glasgow.

“Ben Crompton was actually linked with a move to Celtic when Big Ange was the manager at Parkhead,” said Matterface.

“Not really directly linked, in terms of Postecoglou talking about him, but he was talking about needing defensive options at the time and he was one of the names linked, Ben Crompton.”

What was reported about Celtic’s interest in Ben Crompton back in 2022?

67 Hail Hail wrote a report on Celtic’s interest in Crompton back in May 2022, so this would have been 12 months before he left the Parkhead hotseat.

At the time, Crompton was a teenager, so he wasn’t seen as someone who would come straight into the senior set-up, but join the younger age groups.

Crompton’s contract at Shrewsbury Town was coming to an end and he was available on a free transfer that summer.

But rather than sign for Celtic, he ended up at Sunderland, and given the funny world of football, he ended up coming up against Postecoglou in the FA Cup years later.
