Wilfried Nancy ‘in the race’ to sign ‘fantastic’ Bundesliga striker for Celtic in January

Wilfried Nancy will be keen to add fresh faces to his Celtic squad when the January transfer window opens next month.

The Celtic manager watched his team batter Aberdeen but the 3-1 scoreline didn’t do the performance justice as the Hoops had an incredible 31 shots on goal.

If Celtic had a proper first team striker, who knows what the scoreline would have been as Nancy’s team spurned chance after chance at Parkhead.

Well, it seems the Hoops boss is looking to remedy that as journalist Pete O’Rourke says Celtic are looking at the Bundesliga for a solution to the goal scoring woes.

Celtic want Union Berlin international striker Andrej Ilic

Celtic need a target man figure just like Kelechi Iheanacho to help integrate Nancy’s style more into the squad.

And it seems that Union Berlin striker Andrej Ilic could be the man that he wants to bring to Celtic.

O’Rourke said on X, “Celtic have joined Burnley in the race to sign Union Berlin forward Andrej Ilic ahead of January.”

Towering at over 6 foot, Ilic is known for his physical style and presence, but is he the striker that Celtic really needs right now?

Is Andrej Ilic a good fit for Celtic?

A Serbian international, Ilic has been capped just once for his country in a brief six-minute cameo as the Serbians lost to Albania in October.

Since his move to Union Berlin in 2024, Ilic has scored just eight goals in 32 games. So far this season, the Serbian is yet to open his goal scoring account despite making 14 appearances. He has, however, created six assists.

Berlin manager Steffen Baumgart explained Ilic’s goal scoring troubles to Get Football Germany as, “Being a striker at Union isn’t that easy, because you have to do a lot of defensive work and make the most of the few chances you get.

“His goal was deserved if you’ve watched him in the last few games.

Watch an Andrej Ilic double and tell us if he is good enough for Celtic in the comments.

“The way he throws himself into it up front, the way he does it.

“He’s always outnumbered, in my view he’s often fouled and the ref doesn’t call it, then he gets every foul called against him. But he just keeps going.”

On the plus side, Ilic has scored 73 career goals in 201 appearances and has also added 30 assists to that tally.

He clearly has something about him but is he good enough to play for Celtic?
