A video has emerged on social media of Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis receiving an award from his home town’s cultural association on Friday night.
Giakoumakis was being honoured at an event in the town of Peza at the end of last week. The award was in recognition of his contribution to Greek football as he prepares to enter the UEFA Champions League next season.
And the honour was handed out by his grandfather in an emotional moment that was captured on video. You can watch it for yourself below:
Giakoumakis has had a stunning last 2 years in football after finishing as the top scorer in both the Eredivisie and Scottish Premiership respectively.
Last term, the big Greek forward struck 17 goals despite only being given a regular run in the team after the turn of the year [Transfermarkt]. His form also led to him being recalled to the Greek national team where he’s managed to impress under Gus Poyet.
And his award in Peza is yet another symbol of how far he’s come in what’s been a brilliant period in the Greek striker’s career.
Giorgos Giakoumakis honoured by home town ahead of Celtic return
It’s all coming up trumps for Giakoumakis at the moment. His Celtic career couldn’t be going any better whilst his reputation has clearly been bolstered back home too.
Being a regular in the Greek squad will also be a big honour for him. It will have been one of his key goals after signing for Celtic too. He didn’t want to join up at Parkhead at 27 years of age and fail to capture his international boss’ eye.
Everything has been going brilliantly for Giakoumakis in what’s been a big year for him so far. However, it could get even greater for him next term with huge games coming up for the striker both at club and international level.
The Champions League gives Giorgos an opportunity to seriously make a name for himself after failing to get regular minutes in the competition when he was with AEK Athens.
His target will be ensuring he gets the game-time he’ll feel he’s earned in 2022 as he looks to shoot Celtic to success alongside Kyogo Furuhashi and a potential third option.
One thing’s for sure, the big Greek will certainly be returning to Scotland with his confidence at an all-time high.
