Brentford have had a £10million offer for Celtic-linked Peterborough striker Ivan Toney accepted, according to Sky Sports.

Sky believe that the Hoops were one of four clubs interested in taking last season’s League One top scorer this summer. However, it looks as though a deal has finally been agreed for him to make a move to the Championship instead.

TalkSPORT also reported a similar story 10 days ago as they believed a £6.5m fee had been agreed with the figure going up to £10m based on add-ons.

Speculation that Celtic are interested in Toney appeared to cool after the £5million signing of Albian Ajeti from West Ham United last week (Sky Sports).

There have been no reports of any follow-up from the Parkhead side since then, with Celtic now having four striking options at their disposal.

A saga we can all do with seeing the back of

Some Celtic fans feared last night that the loss of Champions League football had put an end to any chance we had of luring Shane Duffy to Parkhead.

However, in truth, this is the player we can truly put a cross through thanks to our failure in Europe.

Offers in the region of £10m is affordable for Celtic, but is it really a risk we’re going to take? And is it a risk we’re going to take in a position where we’ve got so much cover (or at least we will do when everyone is match-fit)? Certainly not without the cover of Champions League money.

It was already debatable at the best that we would bring in another centre-forward. Celtic have invested heavily in Ajeti to provide the goods this season, whilst we should be focusing all of our energy in trying to persuade Odsonne Edouard to stay in Glasgow for another year.

Toney has already said that his dream is to play in the Premier League (Peterborough Today). That sounds like a call for Brentford to advance on him as opposed to ourselves. And taking that carrot of Champions League football away this season makes us a less attractive proposition for players who haven’t grown up supporting us.

So hopefully Brentford can get this done and just allow us to move on from this one. Toney to Celtic hasn’t looked realistic for a long time, and now it’s even less so after last night.

In other news, Celtic fans have been teasing the club after the announcement of David Turnbull’s move to Parkhead.
