Celtic FC Women have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history with a thumping 8-0 win away to Motherwell today.

Knowing they had to pick up a big win to have chance of winning the title, Fran Alonso’s side were rampant from the off.

There were concerns prior to kick-off with the reveal that seven players were forced to self-isolate following a suspected positive Covid-19 case.

However, five first-half goals put the Ghirls on the road to Europe without a doubt. Three more were added after the interval.

Sadly, Scott Booth’s Glasgow City managed to win comfortably against Rangers. Celtic just miss out on becoming champions but take great credit for forcing the issue to the last day.

The history Ghirls finish the season with 53 points from 21 matches, losing just two games across the campaign.

Before the season started many tipped it to be Rangers to be the ones pushing City for the title this season after heavy investment.

However, as Fran Alonso said on BBC Scotland last week: “We are the best third horse in a two-horse race ever.”

Champions League football will be great for Celtic FC Women

Champions League is a milestone achievement for the Women’s project at Celtic. Hopefully, it will result in more attention and an enhanced budget for the first-team.

With many in the squad now playing professionally, Celtic can really go from strength to strength with the right vision.

I’ve really enjoyed watching Alonso’s side this season. They play with incredible heart and commitment. The way they’ve risen to the challenge of a title race has been thrilling and inspirational in recent weeks.

As we continue to be concerned about what’s happening to the men’s team, they’ve been a ray of light.

I can’t wait to see how they get on against European competition. They enter the first round of the League Path in August. It can’t come quick enough.

We’ll provide full coverage on 67 Hail Hail as always.
