Celtic FC Women are through to the semi-finals of the Sky Sports Cup after thrashing rivals Glasgow City 3-0 live on television tonight.
The women’s edition of the Scottish League Cup, sponsored by Sky, eluded Celtic last season. Now having knocked out one of the tournament favourites, they have a great chance of lifting the trophy for just the second time in the last 13 years.
Fran Alonso’s side were ahead within the opening 5 minutes after Natalie Ross capitalised in the opposition box to head home a Murphy Agnew cross.
That lead held until the interval and, in the second half, Celtic built on their goal advantage with an Amy Gallacher finish from a corner.
Then, Kit Loferski came off the bench to score a brilliant goal. She battled clear of the City defence before finishing exquisitely over the goalkeeper with the outside of her boot.
The three goals have powered the Ghirls into the semi-finals of the competition. The rest of the quarter-final fixtures take place on Sunday and holders Rangers, as well as last season’s finalists Hibernian, will be hoping to book their place in the draw.
The excitement comes with Celtic also locked in a tight battle at the top of the SWPL table, just one point behind leaders Rangers and seven clear of third-placed City.
Two league fixtures are now on the cards before the end of November. First, the team travel away to face Hamilton Accies before hosting Aberdeen on the 26th.
As for this competition, the semi-final is due to take place on Sunday 21st January, with a final to follow in late March.
