Disappointment for Celtic as rivals get Sunday derby revenge

Celtic FC Women have disappointingly lost to rivals Rangers in SWPL 1 this evening, slipping to a 1-0 defeat.

Fran Alonso’s side managed to get a big cup victory over Rangers last week, sending them into the semi-finals of the SWPL Cup.

However, it was three points up for grabs today. And Celtic have now slipped five points behind the league leaders who are forging ahead at the top of the table above both the Ghirls and Glasgow City.

The derby was a big opportunity for the team to impress the wider support, with their match broadcast live on Celtic TV and the Pass To Paradise for season ticket holders.

Sadly, Jane Ross opened the scoring almost immediately, giving Celtic nearly a full 90 minutes to find an equaliser.

However, despite a number of opportunities falling to forward Charlie Wellings, the home side just couldn’t quite find their way to break down Rangers.

Celtic really pushed but never really had that cohesive cutting edge to slice open the opposition defence. There were too many long balls forward and not enough partnerships advancing Alonso’s side up the pitch.

It’s a significant blow, but as we witnessed last season, this squad will fight for everything heading deeper into the campaign. There’s no reason to panic yet about the team’s chances of top-flight glory.

Next up is a match against Hibernian in that previously mentioned semi-final on 14th November.
