Celtic FC Women were on the end of a 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid Femenino in their second UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage match last night under Elena Sadiku.
Previously, the Ghirls made history by qualifying for the groups for the first time in their history, but were on the end of a 2-0 defeat to Twente at New Douglas Park on matchday one.
Last night, Sadiku’s Celtic side made a historic trip to face Real Madrid at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. However, the might of Alberto Toril’s star-studded outfit proved to be too much as the home side ran out 4-0 winners.
Scotland international Caroline Weir opened the scoring before Signe Brunn, Caroline Moller and Linda Caicedo struck in the final 20 minutes for the hosts to put proceedings beyond doubt.
Elena Sadiku’s Celtic did conjur some brave moments against elite opposition, which she quickly pointed out while offering her immediate reaction in the Spanish capital.

Per The Daily Record, Sadiku took solace in some of the encouraging aspects of her side’s performance and commended their ‘braveness’ in difficult surroundings against an elite Real Madrid outfit.
She stated: “I think coming into this game we have highlighted we need to show the braveness we know we have in possession and being confident.
“I was proud of how we defended in the first-half. We frustrated them. We created chances second half and they could have changed the game.
“We need to execute them. How we attacked and how calm we were, that shows what I want from this team. No-one thought we would be here, it is about enjoying it.
“It should not have been 4-0, 2-0 would be more acceptable. I was proud of their efforts. Everyone in Scotland should be behind us because we are here and we are doing something no-one else is doing.”

Four domestic clashes lay in wait before their next clash in Europe’s premier competition against Chelsea at Parkhead, which will be followed up by their second Glasgow Derby encounter of the campaign.
Excitingly, Celtic FC Women’s Champions League meeting with Chelsea will be held at Celtic Park, giving the wider support an opportunity to pack out Paradise on a European night.
