Celtic FC Women star Anna Filbey has announced on Instagram that she’s to leave the club.

The Welsh international, who’s played for both Tottenham and Arsenal, joined Alonso’s Ghirls on loan in February [BBC]. An energetic midfield creator, Filbey starred as Celtic qualified for the Champions League for the first time, while taking the SWPL title race down to the last day.

Ultimately, Glasgow City won the league. But Filbey and co, including exciting talents like Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, Sarah Ewens and Mariah Lee, led an unlikely assault on the title. That experience will have given the whole squad confidence, while ensuring Filbey was able to gain fitness.

Filbey said on Instagram:

“Just wanted to say a massive thank you to @celticfcwomen , the staff, my teammates and our fans for allowing me to enjoy my football again. What an honour it has been to represent such a big club like Celtic and help get them to where they belong, playing champions league football.

“I loved every minute at this great club and wish them nothing but the best for the future. You will always have a fan in me, Mon the Hoops!”

Filbey’s Instagram announcement is a blow, but Celtic FC Women manager Fran Alonso will have little trouble attracting talent

If you’d suggested even two years ago that Celtic would be competing with the English WSL for international players, it would’ve sounded ambitions. However, since turning professional, and winning over supporters with a free-flowing, attacking style, Celtic are an attractive outfit for prodigious talent.

And Filbey certainly fit that criteria. A product of Arsenal’s youth academy, Filbey scored a ridiculous 9 in 13 appearances from midfield [Celtic FC Women]. While there are a multitude of goal scorers in the squad, that’s still a sizeable gap to fill. Yet, you feel as if Fran Alonso and the scouts are going to be able to do it.

Make no mistake; this is a side very much on the up. After beating Rangers three times last season, and with increased exposure in 21-22, this is going to be a landmark campaign for Celtic. Signing up players to join a squad on the rise, competing in Europe, shouldn’t be a huge problem.

But that doesn’t mean we won’t miss Anna Filbey, who shone brightly in a brief spell at Celtic. We’re sure fantastic things await the midfielder.
