Celtic youngster Owen Moffat was delighted to start and get on the scoresheet today. Albeit, he didn’t actually know much about it.

Moffat has told Celtic TV that his delightful finish against Sheffield Wednesday earlier today was a bit of a blur. It came after a surprise start for the Academy prospect, who signed a new deal with the club in January [Celtic FC].

One of a litany of young players who got the nod for Celtic today, Moffat was lively. He told Celtic TV:

“Aye it was good, I just remember it came on a ricochet to me, and I got it on the swivel well.

“I actually never seen it go in, I fell I think!

“I was buzzing [to start], I only found out I was starting today, an hour before the game or so. As soon as I found out I was texting my family telling them I’m starting.

“It was brilliant.”

The youngster played on the right of an attacking three, which may be a sign of things to come under Ange Postecoglou. The young Scotsman was extremely impressive. His darting runs, endless creativity in beating players and his tidy finish marked an excellent day’s work.

There were also notable performances from the likes of Liam Shaw, Adam Montgomery and Leo Hjelde, who all impressed on the day. While it’s just a pre-season friendly, these occasions are often the testing ground for Academy players. A good pre-season, and more could easily follow.

Celtic youngster Moffat and his star turn will give Postecoglou plenty to think about

The fire-haired youngster featured on the right flank today; a definite problem position for Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic.

At the moment, James Forrest is the clear first-choice on the right. Karamoko Dembele wasn’t featured today, in a surprising move that has caused speculation about his future.

Moffat, by no means the obvious choice, looked a natural fit. Nominally a striker, the Academy graduate could stake a claim for more appearances in that position if he continues to impress.

Surely, the opportunities will come. Against Charlton Athletic, Preston North End and West Ham United, there’ll be chances for every young player we saw today. Ange Postecoglou’s promise to bring youth talent through will have had Celtic’s young players feeling optimistic.

As for Owen Moffat? If he builds on today’s performance, we could have a really promising talent in the ranks.

He couldn’t have timed it better.
