Celtic B Team star Rocco Vata sparked a stirring fightback for Republic of Ireland U17s against Bulgaria this afternoon but it wasn’t enough to bag them an opportunity at Euro 2022.

Brought on for Hungarian-Irish midfielder Ivan Savhsak at half-time, Vata – son of former Celtic man Rudi Vata – brought Ireland back into the game with a 61st-minute strike. The Boys in Green conceded twice in first half, with a double from Bulgarian winger Roberto Raychev.

However, the contest would unfortunately end in a 2-2 draw. This means that Ireland now can’t finish as one of the best-placed runners-up, and instead end their Elite Group campaign with a single point.

The draw against the Bulgarians comes after recent losses to Portugal and Finland respectively.

But for Vata, it was yet another fine example of the talented youngster making an impact for his country. The youngsters impact ensured Ireland earned a share of the spoils, and at the very least managed a point from what’s been a gruelling week for them.

Rocco Vata continues to thrive for Republic of Ireland U17s as reputation grows

It’s fair to say that Vata has made the most of his period in the spotlight this season. Operating with Celtic B this term, he’s made a fine impact in the Lowland League and has been one of the standouts as the season has gone on.

Whilst keeping his feet on the ground is imperative, you can’t help but feel excited for the potential he has. Vata has managed to show himself as a proven goal threat at youth level both domestically and internationally.

The fact the game this afternoon changed massively after his introduction says a lot about his ability to bag points on his own.

He’s caught the eye all season with some stunning strikes, and scored as recently as last month for his country in a friendly match against Belgium. There’s something about his ability to deliver when the pressure is on that’s seriously impressing.

It’s just a shame Ireland won’t be going to the Euros. It certainly wasn’t the most straightforward of groups. They’ll most likely point at their 3-2 loss to Finland as a key moment just several days ago.

But at the very least it’s another positive showing from Vata, who’ll hope to continue his momentum heading into the final few weeks of the season.
