Owen Moffat is making a strong case for promotion from Celtic B already

Celtic youngster Owen Moffat continues to take the Lowland League by storm.

His five-goal haul during yesterday’s 10-0 rout of Vale of Leithen was simply the latest display in many this season that suggests he needs to be playing at a higher level.

Don’t get me wrong, I think there’s value in Moffat and his teammates playing a regular schedule of matches against senior players.

However, in the case of the 19-year-old, he’s already making as strong a case as possible that he should be involved more heavily with the first team.

He already has seven goals and two assists for the season. A few of them have been utter class, ending up on highlight reels that have captured the imagination of supporters.

If Ange Postecoglou determines he is not for the Celtic first-team, then at least a loan move elsewhere, perhaps to a Scottish Premiership side or a lower league English side, would serve him well.

The Celtic B project is only useful if it helps uncover talents ready for a step up in competition. Right now, Moffat is the most likely candidate.

Celtic have strong options in attack right now, so I’m not suggesting Moffat is thrown in as a starter every week. However, having him around the match squad and perhaps allowing him to make substitute appearances feels like a natural step based on his current ability.

Get him in the first-team, or get him out on loan, and let’s see what he can do at a higher level.
