Davie Provan slams Scottish FA for investigation of Celtic

Former Celtic player Davie Provan has rubbished the Scottish FA for investigating whether or not the club has breached rules by using Gordon Strachan as a consultant.

As announced by the club this week, Strachan is being brought on for three months as he advises Celtic on the coaching set-up within the club’s academy and women teams.

It has been seen as an unusual appointment because Strachan is employed by fellow Scottish Premiership club Dundee as their technical director.

As reported by The Scottish Daily Mail, the SFA will now consider if that constitutes a breach of Article 13 of their regulations. The ambiguous set of rules concerns dual interest. It will be determined whether or not Strachan has to cut ties with one of the clubs.

Provan reckons it’s ridiculous, telling The Scottish Sun: “The Dens Park outfit raise no objection to Strach sharing his expertise with Celts. Now we’re told Hampden’s Professional Game Board will probe Strachan’s dual role to establish if he’s breaking SFA rules.

“Do they think he’s breached the Official Secrets Act? Given our international team finished bottom of their Euros group with just one point, haven’t Hampden blazers better things to do with their time?”

I’m with Provan here. I reckon this is a pretty absurd set of circumstances. Celtic have made it clear that Strachan will not be making any decisions on the running of the club, or on first-team affairs. He’s simply offering advice to those decision-makers.

How that could possibly be in breach of the Scottish FA articles is beyond me. Neither Celtic or Dundee even thought to notify the governing body before proceeding. Why would they?

Dundee clearly have no issue with this and, in fact, could benefit from Strachan getting a close look at how things work at Lennoxtown in 2021.

The search for a scandal in Scottish football sometimes makes it a parody of itself.
