West Ham source claims club are set to sign Celtic youngster Armstrong Okoflex
West Ham have snared Celtic youngster Armstrong Okoflex, according to a popular Hammers source.
ExWHUemployee, a trusted source on all things West Ham, claims that the Londoners are due to announce the signing, too. Okoflex, who forged a prolific partnership with Karamoko Dembele at youth level, has only made one first-team appearance for Celtic.
When 13 Celtic first-teamers were ruled out after Dubai, Okoflex got his debut in a 1-1 draw with Hibs. While he didn’t blow anyone away with his impact, his movement was promising. Having played in Arsenal’s youth academy, it’s fair to say more was expected of Okoflex by now.
However, opportunities have been at a premium, and his contract situation has left him in limbo at Celtic Park. And now, according to ExWHUemployee, it’s the Hammers who have stepped in.
On popular West Ham podcast The West Ham Way, the source said:
“We have signed one player, I think he’s due to be announced soon and the guy is called Armstrong Okoflex, which is a quality name.
“He plays for Celtic and he’s a former Arsenal youth player.
“He’s actually played a couple of times for Celtic. He was born in Dublin and started out in one of the country’s famous academies St Kevin’s Boys.
“Then Liam Brady spotted him for Arsenal, brought him over and then he signed for Celtic on a three-year deal.
“He’s actually played for Celtic, he made his first-team debut for the club as a substitute against Hibernian in January 2021.
“But I believe his contract is up and I think he’s going to be coming over to West Ham, which will be interesting because he’s already played a couple of times for Celtic so he’s going to have some calibre.”
Could letting Armstrong Okoflex go to West Ham end up being a costly mistake by Celtic?
While there’s not a significant clamour to get Okoflex on the pitch for Celtic, it says a great deal that clubs like West Ham United are keen on him. When he joined Celtic, Okoflex was sold on Brendan Rodgers’ vision and history of bringing through young talents [Celtic FC].
The youngster, who has represented Ireland and England at youth international level [Transfermarkt], cited the example of Raheem Sterling at Liverpool when he made his move.
He said [Celtic FC]:
“I had a meeting with Brendan Rodgers and he was very convincing. He’s a great manager with all the success he’s had at previous clubs and at Celtic, and he was one of the big factors in coming here.
“The manager told me about Raheem Sterling, how he was a young teenager at Liverpool and then he brought him up in pre-season and, because he was doing well and better than the older wingers at the club, he played him in the league games. It shows he’ll play young players and that’s encouraging for me.”
It hasn’t quite worked out that way. For one thing, Okoflex isn’t even a regular for Celtic. Let alone a multi-million pound target for Manchester City.
Could we be losing out on a fantastic talent, or have the Celtic coaches seen enough of Okoflex? Surely, there’d be more of a rush to get the youngster signed to a new deal if there was interest in keeping him at the club. Whatever happens next, we’ll have to wait and see.
