The Celtic supporters have already shown that they’re backing Ange Postecoglou, and therefore must also back his decision to keep Leigh Griffiths.
Celtic today announced that Griff would be staying at the club for a further year. Given the fact talks have appeared to drag on a touch, it wouldn’t be surprising if his contract his perforamnce-based. Of course, the club hasn’t officially provided details, all we know is that Griffiths is here until the summer of 2022.
This is something that will either please or enrage you. There are many out there who believe that Griffiths has let the club down one too many times. His failure to return to pre-season fit last year was a massive hammer blow for the football club and supporters.
Granted, there doesn’t appear to be any issues this time around. Postecoglou has already been taking training at Lennoxtown and will have seen Griffiths up close already. The early signs are clearly promising for the striker, who has had a war of words with former boss Neil Lennon about his fitness issues last term [Sky Sports].
Griffiths now has the sole task of ensuring he’s fit and ready for Midtjylland on July 20th. As things stand, he and Odsonne Edouard will have big roles to play in that one.
Ange Postecoglou has invested in Leigh Griffiths – this is his final chance
Credit to the Celtic boss for making the decision he has. He’ll have known that it wouldn’t be universally approved, but it looks like another sign that he’s going to be doing things his way. He likes what he’s seen and heard from Griffiths, and he’s ready to invest his trust in him.
There’s no point complaining about the decision. It’s been made, and our sole focus should really be to back the new manager. Having a pop at his decisions this early on will only create divisiveness. We had enough of that last season.

It also means Celtic now likely only need one centre-forward in the door this summer too. Edouard is still likely to depart, and a replacement for the Frenchman will be a necessity. But outside of that, Postecoglou is in a good place with his forward line so long as he’s also putting faith in Albian Ajeti to reignite his career this season.
But this is Leigh’s final chance. He has to be aware of this. If he wants to prolong his Celtic career into next term, he needs to show the form we know he’s still capable of. Failure to do so and there truly is no coming back.
For now, plenty of Celtic supporters have reacted positively to the news. Reacting to 67HailHail’s YouTube video on the matter today, the Hoops fans said the following below:
“Job done”
I’ll have a quadruple treble: “Best news I have heard for a while. A player who like many others clearly had issues with Lennon and will flourish under a new management with fresh ideas.”
Paul Andrew Martin: “I said get rid of griff, but ange says clean slate. Griffiths make sure you pay the boss back for this bone he flung you.”
K Dog: “A manager who plans ahead for once. We don’t know the eddy situation and we need depth, easiest way to do that is keep griff. Job done.”
Joe Glen: “Ajeti, Bayo? Of course he gets an extension. Still the best Scottish striker. We take forever to sign anybody so we need him.”
Glenn Maillard: “If he has begged for another chance, then it’s a good sign. Ange is his own man, if he has decided to give Griffiths another chance, so be it. A one year contract is strictly a performance based contract IMO.”
Andy Bhoy: “I would love Leigh Griffiths to stay Because a fit Griffiths is a prolific goalscorer he has proved it. And Postecoglou doesn’t look the type of man who will Be messed about.”
Michael Mcgee: “8 full games and he’s scored 30 goals? Big Ange will get him back in shape.”
John Newlands: “We had no choice. Nobody in. Nobody coming. CL upcoming. If he doesn’t live up to Ange expectations will be replaced in due course. Maybe by end of window we will have a new striker to put pressure on him. He’s good enough and if Ange gets the best we have a win.”
